Richard Dyers Theory
Richard Dyers Theory
Dyers star theory states that celebrities are constructed images and not free artists. Stars are constructed. by institutions to sell to the audience and make profit. He believes that celebrities aren't real people and are instead a constructions. For example Miley Cyprus is well known for her provocation dance moves and nudity while on a wrecking ball, however she would not do any of these things in her own home meaning that the person Miley Cyrus and the celebrity her are two different people.
The second half of his theory states that stars must be present and absent. They can be present whether its through merchandise, social media but also must be absent in the fact that they are actually out of reach to the consumers of their music and fans. For example Harry styles was and still is a massive icon to make people and his fans especially young teenage girls, for example having posters, magazines and much for, although he is not actually obtainable to them.
Dyer's theory is split up into three parts:
- Audiences and institutions
- Constitutions
- Hegemony
