Your understanding of genre as a key concept of Media Studies
My understanding of genre as a key concept of Media Studies
In media studies genre is a important key of reading and understanding media text and language from the consumers to the producers. Genre is created by the producers which is targeting a specific audience.
The main conventions and codes of genre:
Everything created in the media is categorized into a genre.
For example music is put into genres:
-Rock
-Jazz
-Pop
-hip hop
-country
-Rap
-blues
-Heavy Metal
The Beatles:
For example, in this music video of the Beatles who are a classic rock band. We can clearly see through the typical knowledge of the rock genre codes and conventions this is a rock song. In the music video of Don't let me down the lighting used throughout this music video is filmed in day light dim and dull evening time which is yet again this stereotypically fitting in the rock genre with this dull and dark feel to it, swell as the use of there instruments with electric guitar and drums and base which is one of the biggest outstanding code for the rock genre. This codes and conventions are important elements as they create a specific genre which allows the audience to be able to see which genre it is allowing them to be able to categorize themselves in what type they like to listen to. Each genre has a specific codes and conventions which makes it so easy to assume the genre of something.
