Understanding of representation as a kay concept of media studies
Representation is how the media texts deal with and present gender, age, ethnicity, national and regional identity, social issues and events to an audience. Media texts have power to shape an audience's knowledge and understanding about these important topics. Representation is a huge factor in media studies as is how everything is shaped and decoded to the consumers, representation is in tv, films and every Digital media platform. Representation in the media as gotten much more attention in the past few years. Its a key concept of media studies because it sends out a specific message to the minorities and how they view it by society and how they even view themselves.
For example Stuart Hall's Representation theory where he believes that the media often uses stereotypes and which is probably the reason they were created in the first place and that there is not a true representation of people or events in a text. He also believes that this stereotypes and ideologies which come from a more powerful dominant group within society (white upper class, middle class males)and majority of media companies are owned by these group. Meaning there is a tendey of them representing people outside of this group stereotypically and negative ways.
